← Electrical Advice & Planning

For a conventional two-channel Sonos Amp installation, plan around independent music areas, not the number of rooms or speakers alone. Speakers connected to one Amp share its programme. If two areas need different music at the same time, they need separately controllable playback equipment.

This guide covers the conventional Sonos Amp used with passive speakers. Multizone amplifier products need a separate design. For a Toronto or GTA renovation, start by deciding how the household wants to listen, then select the equipment.

Define the listening areas first

List each space where you want music: kitchen, living room, patio, office and bedrooms. For each, decide whether it should play independently or normally share another area’s music.

An open kitchen and lounge might be treated as one listening area. A separate office may need its own source and volume control. Room boundaries alone do not determine the answer; your use of the spaces does.

These examples are planning scenarios, not equipment lists for every property. Speaker quantities, TV arrangements and the exact products can change the design.

Sharing music is different from independent playback

Separate Sonos products can be grouped to play the same content in sync, then ungrouped for different listening. That allows independently equipped areas to join together for a gathering without permanently making them one playback area.

Connecting more speakers to one Amp does not create additional independent streams. A suitable local volume control may adjust a room’s level, but it does not make that room able to choose a different song from the same Amp output.

Check the speaker load before adding pairs

Sonos provides specific guidance for connecting four speakers: all four must be 8-ohm speakers. It separately permits six compatible Sonos Architectural speakers with Amp. That six-speaker guidance is not permission to connect any six speakers.

Provide exact speaker model numbers, including any existing equipment you hope to reuse. The installer should verify the permitted configuration and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid choosing amplifier quantities through a generic “speakers per room” formula.

Decide how television audio will work

Tell us which spaces need TV sound and whether you want stereo playback or a surround arrangement. Sonos Amp supports TV connection through HDMI ARC, with the final arrangement dependent on the television and audio equipment.

An Amp used in a home-theatre role should be counted according to that system’s design. Do not allocate the same equipment to unrelated rooms without reviewing the intended functions. Ask for the proposal to show music use and TV use separately.

Plan cable routes and equipment locations

During renovation, coordinate speaker positions and cable routes before ceilings close. Drawings should identify the rooms, speaker locations and where each cable terminates. Clear labels make later changes easier to understand.

Discuss accessible amplifier locations, ventilation, power and the home network. A cabinet should be designed around the equipment’s installation requirements rather than selected only because it hides the hardware.

For patios, confirm outdoor suitability of the selected speakers and consider how that area will be controlled separately from indoor listening. Include the intended equipment location and access in the plan.

Prepare a room-by-room brief

  • Mark areas that must play different music simultaneously.
  • List passive and powered speakers already owned.
  • Identify televisions and requested audio functions.
  • Show speaker positions and available cable routes.
  • Describe everyday controls and any future expansion.

Ask for an equipment schedule tied to those requirements. It should explain which areas each Amp serves, how grouping works and what setup and demonstration are included.
