Common electrical problems.
Clear next steps.
Looking for help with common electrical problems in Toronto or the GTA? Electric FX investigates recurring faults, assesses older installations and plans electrical upgrades around your home’s needs. Start with the signs below, then speak with our team about the right next step.
Understand the concern.
Plan the work.
Some enquiries start with a fault; others start with a new vehicle or renovation. These six situations explain what to tell us and how we can help. Symptoms are starting points for an assessment, not a diagnosis on their own.
Repeated breaker trips
A breaker that keeps switching off needs investigation. The cause may involve the connected equipment, circuit loading or a wiring fault. Repeatedly resetting it does not resolve the underlying issue.
What you may notice
- Trips when several appliances run together
- Power cuts out on the same circuit
- A breaker will not stay on
How Electric FX can help
We trace the affected circuit, assess the connected loads and explain the repair or circuit changes needed.
Lights that flicker or change brightness
Changes in lighting can come from a fixture, lamp or dimmer, but loose connections can also create a serious hazard. Tell us whether the issue affects one light, several rooms or the whole property.
What you may notice
- Persistent flickering
- Lights dipping when equipment starts
- Buzzing switches or unusual changes in brightness
How Electric FX can help
We investigate the pattern and check the relevant lighting controls, circuits and supply connections.
Planning a home EV charger
Before choosing a charging speed, we review your electrical service, existing demand, parking location and cable route. Level 2 charging needs a suitable circuit and properly selected equipment; spare breaker spaces alone do not establish available capacity.
What you may notice
- An EV purchase or delivery is approaching
- No suitable charging circuit at the parking space
- Questions about a 100A service or future electrical loads
How Electric FX can help
We assess installation options, including suitable charging settings or energy management where appropriate. An upgrade is recommended when the assessment shows it is needed. We arrange the required ESA notification for the installation.
Older wiring and past alterations
The condition of an older installation matters as much as its age. Knob-and-tube wiring, aluminum branch circuits, damaged insulation or undocumented alterations deserve a closer look. Aluminum wiring is not automatically unsafe, but its connections and devices need appropriate assessment.
What you may notice
- Older wiring identified during renovations
- Two-slot receptacles or uncertain grounding
- Brittle insulation, damaged devices or questionable additions
How Electric FX can help
We review the accessible installation and discuss targeted repairs or rewiring. For insurance questions, confirm the insurer’s requirements rather than assuming a full replacement is mandatory.
Power lost to part of your home
An outage affecting only a room, circuit or part of the property can have several causes. A protective device may have operated, or there may be a fault in the equipment, wiring or supply. The pattern helps guide the investigation.
What you may notice
- Several receptacles stop working
- One area repeatedly loses power
- Power returns intermittently
- Only part of the home has electricity
How Electric FX can help
Check your utility’s outage information when appropriate. If the problem appears limited to your property, contact us to arrange fault finding. We will explain if the utility also needs to be involved.
Panel damage or capacity concerns
Visible corrosion, moisture damage, scorching or unusual sounds around electrical equipment warrant professional attention. A panel’s age alone does not determine whether it needs replacement. Its condition, compatibility and the home’s electrical needs all matter.
What you may notice
- Rust or evidence of water entry
- Discolouration or a burning odour
- Unusual buzzing or heat
- Plans to add major electrical loads
How Electric FX can help
We assess the panel and service, explain the findings and discuss repair, replacement or capacity upgrades where appropriate. Do not remove the panel cover to investigate.
A practical next step for your home.
