Keep the essentials running

A practical connection
for portable backup power.

GenerLink is a transfer device installed behind a compatible electricity meter. It connects a portable generator to your existing breaker panel and isolates the home from the utility supply while generator power is in use.

You select the circuits you need at the panel, within the system’s capacity. Your generator supplies the power; GenerLink provides the connection.

Plan around what matters most.

We review your priorities and the starting demand of motors and pumps before recommending a setup.

  • Refrigeration & household essentialsFridge, freezer, selected lighting and communications.
  • Heating & water systemsCompatible furnace equipment, sump pumps or well pumps, subject to load assessment.
  • Flexible circuit selectionChoose essential loads and leave high-demand equipment off when capacity is limited.
Choose the right equipment

30A or 40A?
Start with your generator.

The transfer switch, GenerLok cord, generator outlet and planned loads need to work together. We confirm the combination before supply and installation.

30A

Essential-load planning

Up to 7,200 watts at 240V through an appropriately rated setup. A practical option when the chosen generator and your essential loads fit within that capacity.

40A

More available capacity

Up to 9,600 watts at 240V through an appropriately rated setup. Suitable where a compatible generator can supply the additional power and the selected cord and outlet support it.

These are equipment capacity limits, not a promise of generator output. Actual available power may be lower. Models with optional surge protection and suitable cord lengths can be included in your proposal.

Approval is property-specific. Serving a city does not mean every utility or meter configuration there accepts GenerLink. We check your address, utility provider and service equipment first. If it is unsuitable, we can assess another approved transfer arrangement.

From assessment to handover

Your quote checklist

  • Property address and electricity utility provider
  • Photos of the outside of the meter and closed electrical panel
  • Main breaker rating, if visible without removing covers
  • Generator make, model and outlet photo, if you own one
  • Appliances and circuits you want to run during an outage
  • Proposed outdoor generator location and approximate cord distance

Exterior photos are enough to start. Do not open electrical equipment or remove meter seals.

Before you book

GenerLink installation FAQs.

Clear answers for homeowners planning portable backup power.

Will GenerLink work at my address?

That depends on your local utility, meter socket, service arrangement and generator. Standard meter-mounted GenerLink equipment is intended for compatible single-phase services rated 200A or less. We confirm suitability and current utility requirements before recommending equipment or booking installation.

Can I use the portable generator I already own?

Possibly. Send the exact make, model and a photo of its output receptacles. We check voltage, output, plug type, neutral configuration and GFCI compatibility against the manufacturer’s requirements. A matching plug alone does not confirm compatibility. Any generator changes must follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Does GenerLink start my generator automatically?

No. You need to position, connect and start the portable generator, then manage the circuits being used according to the operating instructions. GenerLink provides the transfer connection and utility isolation; it does not provide automatic generator starting or automatic load management.

Can it power my whole house?

It connects generator power to the existing panel, but available power is limited by the generator, transfer equipment and cord. You choose which circuits to use and keep the combined running and starting demand within those limits. Large loads such as EV charging, electric heating or air conditioning need specific assessment.

Do I need a new panel or a separate generator subpanel?

An eligible meter-mounted installation generally uses the existing panel without adding a dedicated generator subpanel. Existing equipment condition or an incompatible service arrangement may require a different design. We identify any additional work in your written quote.

How long does installation take?

Timing depends on compatibility checks, equipment availability, utility scheduling and the condition of the existing meter equipment. We confirm the installation window and expected power interruption after reviewing the property. A short equipment installation does not include all the planning and utility arrangements.

Is surge protection included?

GenerLink models are available with or without surge protection. We identify the selected model in your quote and can review how it fits with your home’s existing surge protection.

What if my utility does not accept meter-mounted GenerLink?

We can assess an approved generator inlet and transfer-switch arrangement or discuss a standby generator system. Any alternative must suit the property, generator and applicable utility and electrical requirements.

Safe operation starts with planning

Keep generator exhaust outdoors.

Operate a portable generator outdoors, away from doors, windows and air intakes, following the manufacturer’s required clearances. Never run it inside a home or garage, even with the door open. Keep working carbon monoxide alarms in the home and follow the operating and refuelling instructions.

Read ESA’s generator safety guidance. For product information, see GenerLink specifications and the manufacturer’s compatibility guide. Current equipment requirements are confirmed for your project.
