Start with the whole system

The right upgrade starts with the right assessment.

An aging fuse box, damaged breaker panel or lack of circuit positions can make an upgrade worth considering. We assess equipment condition, approved breaker availability and the circuits you plan to add.

A service upgrade increases the electrical capacity supplied to your property. A panel replacement updates the equipment that distributes that power. A new panel or subpanel alone does not increase the capacity of the incoming service.

Modern equipment.
Room for your circuits.

We help you understand what is needed now and what is worth planning for while the work is underway.

01 · Fuse-box replacement

From fuses to circuit breakers

Replace an older fuse box with a modern breaker panel, a clearly identified circuit directory and room for the circuits your project needs. We assess the existing wiring and service rating first. A fuse-to-breaker conversion does not, by itself, increase your incoming electrical capacity.

02 · Equipment reliability

Old or faulty breaker panels

Damaged equipment, deteriorated connections and limited availability of approved replacement breakers can make panel replacement the practical choice. We assess the panel and circuits to identify the cause of trouble before recommending repairs or an upgrade.

03 · Modern circuit protection

Panels with limited AFCI options

If suitable new arc-fault breakers are unavailable for your existing panel, a modern panel can make protection upgrades and future circuit additions easier. We check approved compatibility and any permitted alternatives before recommending replacement.

04 · Additional circuits

Subpanels & circuit expansion

Add circuit positions for garages, additions and renovated spaces where the service and feeder have sufficient capacity. A subpanel distributes the power you already have; it does not increase the size of your utility service.

A panel replacement or subpanel does not increase incoming service capacity. We assess the existing supply before adding loads.

Clear communication at every stage

From assessment
to final checks.

  1. Assess the property

We review the existing equipment, available capacity, site conditions and the electrical loads you want to add.

  2. Define the scope

You receive a clear proposal covering the recommended work, equipment and any utility or site requirements that affect the project.

  3. Coordinate the work

We arrange the required ESA notification and inspection steps, coordinate utility involvement and discuss the planned power interruption with you.

  4. Install & complete

Careful installation, circuit identification and final checks, with ESA acceptance documentation provided once the work has been accepted.

Before you upgrade

Good questions.
Clear answers.

Every property is different. An assessment helps turn the options into a clear plan for yours.

What should a panel-replacement quote include?

Look for the panel and approved breaker selection, circuit identification, grounding and bonding work, any wiring repairs, ESA coordination and planned power interruption. Your proposal should identify any separate utility charges or repairs to finished surfaces. Increasing the incoming service capacity is a different scope.

How should I prepare for the planned power interruption?

Keep the panel and agreed work areas accessible, make arrangements for anyone who needs uninterrupted power, and tell us about equipment that must stay operational. We discuss the expected outage and any project-specific preparation before the scheduled work. Utility reconnection depends on the required coordination and authorization, so the timing is confirmed for your installation.

Do I need a panel replacement or a service upgrade?

That depends on whether the issue is equipment condition, a lack of circuit space or insufficient electrical capacity. We assess all three. A replacement panel may address condition or circuit space, while an increase in service capacity involves reviewing the incoming supply and related equipment.

Will my power need to be turned off?

A service or panel upgrade involves a planned power interruption. The length of the interruption depends on the work and any utility or inspection coordination. We discuss the expected schedule and preparation with you before the installation.

Who handles the ESA notification and inspection?

Electric FX coordinates the required ESA notification and inspection process for our electrical work, along with utility disconnection and reconnection arrangements where needed. We provide the acceptance documentation once ESA has accepted the work. Read ESA’s notification and inspection guidance.

How much does electrical panel replacement cost in Toronto?

Our planning range is $1,500–$3,000+ CAD, plus HST, for panel replacement at the existing service capacity. Equipment selection, circuit count, wiring repairs, access and utility coordination affect the final quote. Increasing the incoming supply is a separate electrical service upgrade. Your written proposal identifies the included work and any additional charges. Read our panel replacement versus service upgrade guide to compare the two scopes.

Does replacing a panel mean every circuit needs an AFCI breaker?

Not automatically. ESA Bulletin 26-29-6 explains that replacing, relocating or upgrading a service or panel does not by itself require AFCI protection on existing branch circuits when no receptacles are added. New wiring and circuit extensions have their own requirements. ESA recommends adding arc-fault protection to existing wiring. We assess the protection required for your specific scope.

Read ESA’s guidance on electrical replacements and alterations (PDF).

What if new AFCI breakers are not available for my old panel?

We check the exact panel model, approved breaker options and circuit arrangement. Replacement can be a sensible long-term solution, especially if the panel is faulty or you need more circuits. Some installations have permitted alternatives to panel replacement; ESA’s guidance addresses certain older-panel AFCI arrangements. We explain the suitable options for your home.

Will a larger panel stop breakers from tripping?

Not necessarily. A breaker may trip because of a circuit overload, a wiring fault or a problem with connected equipment. More service capacity does not repair a faulty branch circuit. We investigate the cause and quote the work that addresses it.

Does a panel upgrade include rewiring the whole house?

No. Replacing the service or panel does not replace the wiring throughout your home. If our assessment identifies wiring repairs or replacement needed for the project, we explain and price that work separately.

What should I send with my enquiry?

Your address, a description of the work you are planning, and photos of the outside of your panel and meter area are a useful starting point. There is no need to remove any electrical covers. We will let you know what else is needed and arrange a site assessment as appropriate.
