LED lights that flicker, buzz or glow after switching off need the lamp, driver and control combination reviewed. Compatibility or settings can be involved, but these symptoms should not automatically be dismissed as normal LED behaviour.

Start by describing when the problem occurs. Lights flickering only near their lowest setting present a different troubleshooting question from a faint glow with the control off or changing brightness across several rooms.

Check the exact products

Record the fixture or lamp model and the dimmer model from packaging, invoices or existing project records. For LED strips or fixtures with separate drivers, include the driver specification.

A dimmable label does not establish compatibility with every control. Manufacturers specify supported dimming methods and equipment combinations. Have the installer review those requirements before selecting replacement products.

Flickering near minimum brightness

Some compatible dimmers offer model-specific trim adjustments that set the usable dimming range. Lutron describes low-end trim as a way to address instability near the lowest level on supported controls.

That setting is not a universal remedy for faulty wiring or an unsuitable driver. The installer should confirm the product combination and use the instructions for the exact dimmer. A stable light level and acceptable dimming range should be verified afterward.

Buzzing from the fixture or control

Identify the apparent source without opening equipment. Tell the installer whether the sound occurs at full brightness, while dimmed or whenever the circuit is on.

Lutron’s troubleshooting guidance identifies incompatibility as one possible explanation for LED buzzing during dimming. Noise accompanied by odours, crackling, damage or concerning heat requires electrical assessment rather than a settings adjustment alone.

Faint light after the control is off

This is sometimes called ghosting. Lutron explains that certain non-neutral electronic controls pass a small operating current through the lighting load, and some LEDs respond with a faint glow or intermittent flicker.

The appropriate remedy depends on the dimmer, lighting load and installation. Have the installer check manufacturer guidance. Do not add an improvised resistor, bypass or wiring modification to stop the glow.

SymptomWhat to share with the installer
Flicker at low brightnessLowest stable setting and exact light/control models.
BuzzingApparent source and brightness setting.
Glow when offWhether it is steady or intermittent.
Different behaviour between fixturesModels, quantities and any mixed lamp types.

Mixed products can complicate the result

A group may contain lamps from different manufacturers, replacement batches or fixture types. Record that mix rather than assuming every light connected to one control behaves identically.

For a renovation, coordinate fixtures, drivers and controls before ordering. Ask for a representative installation or compatibility review when the design includes specialty lighting or a demanding dimming requirement.

Separate control issues from wider electrical problems

If unrelated lights change brightness, circuits lose power or the problem follows large-appliance use, explain that pattern. It may require investigation beyond the dimmer.

Stop using equipment with burning odours, visible damage or crackling. Keep inspection of wiring and energized equipment with the electrician. Smartphone video can help document an existing symptom when it is safe, but it does not replace testing.

Common questions

Will a smart dimmer fix every LED problem?

No. It still needs to suit the lamp or driver and the installation.

Should I replace all my lights first?

Have the combination assessed before committing to a broad replacement. A verified recommendation can address the actual cause.
