Choose security cameras around the coverage and recording you need, then compare how they connect and receive power. PoE cameras use a compatible Ethernet connection for power and data. Wi-Fi cameras use a wireless network connection, but still need a power arrangement.
For Toronto and GTA homes, cable access, network conditions and ongoing costs can influence the choice as much as camera specifications. Define the complete system before comparing equipment prices.
Start with the views you need
Identify the entrance, driveway, side gate and other areas you want to monitor. Explain what you need to see in each view and whether reviewing activity after an event is the priority.
Camera count alone does not establish useful coverage. Review mounting height, viewing direction, lighting and obstructions. Consider the expected view during the day and at night.
Plan views around your property and discuss privacy settings or masking where available. Avoid making neighbouring windows or unrelated areas the focus of the installation.
PoE combines power and data on a cable
Power over Ethernet supplies a compatible camera through its network cable using suitable equipment, such as a PoE switch or recorder. Axis describes this one-cable arrangement for supported cameras.
The design still needs cable routes, a suitable power budget and a location for supporting equipment. Exact camera requirements matter; not every PoE source has the same capability.
PoE is worth reviewing when cables can be installed during a renovation or routed discreetly through an existing property. Ask the installer to show the proposed routes and any visible sections before work begins.
Wi-Fi changes the data connection, not every requirement
A Wi-Fi camera may use a plug-in power supply or batteries, depending on the model. Confirm its power arrangement and whether charging or battery access will be practical at the proposed mounting location.
Have network coverage assessed at each camera position. A phone working inside the house does not establish the camera’s performance at every outdoor location. Discuss the selected equipment and actual conditions.
If powered equipment needs a new receptacle or supply provision, include that work in the quote. Wireless communication should not be interpreted as a promise that no installation work is required.
| Decision | PoE system | Wi-Fi system |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Ethernet cable to each compatible camera. | Wireless network connection at the camera. |
| Power | Compatible PoE source and sufficient power budget. | Model-specific wired supply or batteries. |
| Installation | Plan cable routes and equipment location. | Plan coverage, mounting and power access. |
| Recording | Confirm recorder, storage and supported functions. | Confirm local or cloud options and subscription requirements. |
Compare recording separately
Decide whether you need event clips or continuous recording, and how long footage should remain available. Connection type alone does not answer those questions.
For example, Google distinguishes event history from continuous history, with availability depending on camera model, power and subscription. Check the exact product rather than assuming a battery camera provides continuous recording.
Ask how footage is retrieved, what happens when storage fills and which functions have ongoing charges. Include any recorder or storage equipment in the comparison.
Discuss outages and account access
Ask what the selected system can do during an internet interruption and during a power outage. Those are different conditions. Any backup-power provision should cover the equipment needed for the intended function.
Agree on account ownership and who can view recordings. Keep a record of equipment, setup details and support arrangements. Discuss account security and software-update responsibilities at handover.
Request a complete installation proposal
Provide property photos, desired views and details of existing network equipment. Ask the proposal to identify camera models, recording functions, cable or power work, setup and any subscription exclusions.
