← Electrical Advice & Planning
A general planning range for LED pot light installation is approximately $75–$150+ per light, before HST. This is a general budget guide rather than a fixed price for every installation. Fixture selection, ceiling access, wiring, controls and the overall scope determine your written quote.
For a Toronto renovation, the useful question is what the finished lighting package includes. Ten lights in an open ceiling and ten lights in a finished ceiling may require different work even when the fixture count matches.
What does the per-light price cover?
Before comparing prices, establish whether fixture supply, wiring and installation are all included. Ask whether the proposal assumes existing circuits and switches or includes new ones. Dimmers, additional switching locations and smart controls should be identified.
For illustration, ten lights at the planning range above represent $750–$1,500+ before HST for the quoted per-light scope. That arithmetic is not a complete room quote: separate controls, circuit changes, ceiling repairs or specialty fixtures can increase the total.
Fixture selection changes the budget and result
Slim fixtures, regressed downlights and adjustable gimbals have different appearances and lighting characteristics. Compare the specified product, trim, colour temperature and intended use rather than assuming every four-inch fixture gives the same result.
A kitchen may need comfortable general illumination alongside task lighting over work surfaces. Artwork or cabinetry may benefit from a more focused arrangement. Choose fixtures around the room’s purpose and finish preferences before deciding on a price per light.
Ceiling conditions matter
Open framing provides opportunities to route wiring and position equipment before finishes are installed. In an existing ceiling, joists, ductwork, plumbing and limited access can affect the layout and labour.
Tell the electrician about plaster, decorative ceilings, insulation and any special building assemblies. Confirm the suitability of the selected fixture and installation method. Do not assume a fixture can be installed in every ceiling simply because its cutout fits.
| Budget item | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Fixture package | Which model and finish are included? |
| Electrical work | Are new circuits or switch locations required? |
| Controls | Are compatible dimmers or smart controls included? |
| Ceiling access | Will additional openings be needed? |
| Restoration | Who patches and paints disturbed finishes? |
Plan the layout before choosing the quantity
More lights do not automatically create a better room. Start with furniture, work surfaces, ceiling height and the areas you want to highlight. Review the proposed layout with your designer before cutouts begin.
Include decorative fixtures, undercabinet lighting and wall lighting in the same discussion. A thoughtful combination can provide more flexibility than adding a uniform grid of downlights throughout the room.
Include dimming and electrical capacity
Confirm that the controls suit the selected lights and drivers. Existing switches may need changes, and a renovation may involve circuit work beyond the fixture installation.
Describe how you want the room to operate: one switch for all lights, separate zones or programmed scenes. Decide this before rough-in so wiring and control locations support the plan.
What should you send for a quote?
Provide room dimensions, ceiling photos, access information and drawings if available. Identify the preferred fixture style and existing switch locations. Tell us if the project includes repainting or ceiling replacement so access can be coordinated.
Common questions
Are fixtures and dimmers always included?
No. Compare the written scope and product list, including any homeowner-supplied items.
Can pot lights be added to a finished room?
Often, but access, ceiling construction and circuit conditions determine the method and cost.
