← Electrical Advice & Planning
Plan LED strip lighting as a complete system before cabinetry is manufactured. The tape, channel, diffuser, power supply and controls all contribute to the result. Cable entries and access need coordination with the cabinetmaker as well as the electrical contractor.
For Toronto and GTA kitchens and custom interiors, the goal might be clear countertop lighting, a soft shelf accent or a continuous-looking line within a reveal. Establish the effect first, then select the components.
Separate task lighting from decorative accents
Explain what each run should do. Under-cabinet lighting used for food preparation has a different purpose from a gentle toe-kick or display-shelf accent. Identify where the light should fall and the positions from which it will be visible.
Review cabinet elevations and finishes together. Reflective counters and glossy materials can reveal a light source or reflections that were not obvious in a product photograph. Consider a sample for important details.
Select the channel before cutting the recess
Channels can be surface-mounted, angled or recessed, depending on the design and selected product. Confirm the exact profile, dimensions, mounting method and end details before the cabinetmaker creates openings.
A diffuser can soften the appearance, but it does not guarantee that individual LED points will disappear. Tape selection, channel depth, lens, viewing angle and nearby surfaces all matter.
Ask for a sample assembly if a seamless line is essential to the design. Confirm the result from normal viewing positions rather than only looking directly at the fixture.
Agree on colour and output
Compare the light with the room’s other fixtures and actual finishes. Decide whether the installation needs a fixed white appearance, adjustable white light or colour effects. Those choices affect the tape and supporting equipment.
Ask how output will serve the intended task and how it will feel in the evening. More output is not automatically a better result for a small display niche or a low-level accent.
| Decision | Detail to record |
|---|---|
| Lighting purpose | Task, accent or both, with the surfaces to be illuminated. |
| Channel | Exact profile, lens, recess dimensions and mounting responsibility. |
| Light appearance | Selected tape, colour functions and required output. |
| Power and access | Driver locations, feeds and service openings. |
| Controls | Dimming method, compatible equipment and separate groups. |
Plan the power supply and feed locations
The driver must suit the selected tape and installation. Capacity is only one consideration; product voltage, permitted run lengths, cable routes and control requirements also need review.
Provide the lengths and locations of each illuminated section. Have the electrician establish the required power-feed arrangement before the cabinetmaker conceals routes. Do not assume every shelf can be supplied from one distant driver.
Manufacturer systems illustrate this coordinated approach. Liteline offers assemblies combining tape, channel, lens and driver; Lutron Lumaris uses matched components for its control functions. The final selection must suit your particular installation.
Keep equipment accessible for servicing
Agree on driver and connection locations with the millwork contractor. Access should remain possible after drawers, fixed shelves and decorative panels are installed.
A location should not be chosen only because it hides the equipment. Confirm that it meets the product’s installation conditions and that a service technician can reach the components. Mark access provisions on the drawings.
Match dimming and smart controls
Choose the driver and control arrangement together. A dimmable strip or power supply does not mean every existing dimmer is compatible. Discuss the low-level performance you expect.
For Lutron integration, identify the system, driver and controls in the proposal. Separate countertop task lighting from decorative accents where useful, so an evening scene does not need to illuminate every strip equally.
Clarify responsibilities before fabrication
Ask who supplies components, routes channels, provides cable openings, installs profiles and finishes the millwork. Include electrical installation, setup and any excluded cabinetry work in the written scope.
