← Electrical Advice & Planning
EV charger installation cost depends on the electrical work your property needs, not simply the charger you buy. Wiring distance, access, available capacity and equipment selection can make two home installations very different. A useful budget starts with a defined scope and a written quote.
For Toronto and GTA homeowners, Electric FX plans charging around the vehicle, daily driving and parking arrangement. Our team assesses the installation before recommending the circuit and any additional equipment.
Separate charger supply from installation
A charger advertised online usually has its own equipment price. That price does not establish the cost of connecting it to your home. Confirm whether your electrical quote includes the charger or assumes you will supply it.
Share the exact model before purchasing. The installation method, charging settings and manufacturer instructions affect the design. A product selected only by its advertised maximum output may not suit the capacity available at your property.
Wiring distance and access affect labour
A parking space beside an accessible panel presents different conditions from a detached garage across the yard. Finished ceilings, masonry, outdoor routing and underground work can add labour and materials.
Discuss visible conduit, proposed penetrations and any access openings before agreeing to the route. If excavation or opening finished surfaces is required, identify who handles that work and who restores the area afterward.
| Installation condition | What to clarify in the quote |
|---|---|
| Short, accessible route | Circuit, mounting, connections and testing. |
| Finished rooms between panel and charger | Routing, access openings and finish repairs. |
| Detached garage or driveway location | Outdoor wiring, trenching and restoration. |
| Limited electrical capacity | Charging rate, energy management or service work. |
Does a 100A service mean an expensive upgrade?
Not automatically. The assessment must consider existing loads and charging needs. Empty breaker positions do not establish spare electrical capacity, and a full-looking panel does not alone prove that the utility service needs upgrading.
Depending on the findings, the proposed solution may include an appropriate charging rate, an approved EV energy management system or a service upgrade. Ask for the cost and practical effect of each suitable option, including how managed charging behaves when other equipment is operating.
Compare hardwired and receptacle-based installations
Confirm the connection method for the selected charger. A receptacle installation involves its own equipment and applicable protection; a hardwired installation involves a permanent connection. Neither should be priced without reviewing the product and location.
If an existing receptacle is being considered, have its suitability assessed. Its presence is not proof that the complete circuit is appropriate for the charger.
What should a complete quote include?
- Charger supply, if included, and the agreed charging configuration.
- New circuit, breaker, wiring route, mounting and electrical connections.
- Any energy management, panel modifications or service upgrade.
- Testing, setup and handover instructions.
- Applicable ESA notification and inspection arrangements.
- Clear exclusions, taxes and responsibility for finish repairs.
ESA requires a notification before EV charger installation starts. Retain the Certificate of Acceptance once the work is accepted. These arrangements should be part of the installation discussion.
How can you keep the budget practical?
Choose a location that works with your parking and offers a reasonable wiring route. Share future plans, including a second EV, before the design is finalized. Compare proposals using the same equipment and scope rather than choosing by the lowest headline price.
There is no single installed price that accurately covers every property. Send photos of the closed panel, proposed charger location and accessible route, along with the vehicle and charger details. Do not remove the panel cover for photographs.
Common questions
Is the charger included in the installation price?
Only when the written scope says so. Confirm equipment supply separately.
Can I avoid a service upgrade?
Possibly. The load assessment and suitable equipment determine the options.
