← Electrical Advice & Planning
When hiring someone for electrical work in your Ontario home, verify the Licensed Electrical Contracting business responsible for the project. An individual’s trade qualification or Master Electrician licence is not the same as authorization to operate an electrical contracting business.
For a Toronto service call, renovation or equipment installation, establish the business identity before work starts. Then review its proposal, insurance information and arrangements for the applicable ESA process.
Ask for the ECRA/ESA contractor licence
Request the business’s seven-digit ECRA/ESA licence number and verify it using ESA’s contractor search. Match the business name to the proposal and the party you intend to hire.
A logo, review profile or verbal assurance is not a substitute for that check. If the name on the quote differs from the licence information, ask the contractor to explain the relationship before proceeding.
Understand the team’s qualifications
A certified electrician has trade qualifications. A Master Electrician has a distinct licence connected to managing and supervising electrical work within the contracting framework. The electrical contractor licence authorizes the contracting business.
Ask who will coordinate the job, who is responsible for technical decisions and how work will be supervised. A project may involve qualified electricians and apprentices within the business’s authorized working arrangement.
Review insurance and site requirements
Ask for current liability insurance information appropriate to your project. Where relevant, request WSIB clearance and any documents required by your condominium, builder or property manager.
Discuss special access arrangements or insurance documentation early. Insurance is one part of contractor selection; it does not replace a clear scope, licence verification or suitable workmanship.
| Check | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Business licence | ECRA/ESA number and matching business identity. |
| Project responsibility | Site contact, supervision and decision process. |
| Insurance documents | Current coverage and project-specific requirements. |
| Written scope | Equipment, work stages, exclusions and pricing. |
| Completion records | Invoice, changes and applicable ESA documentation. |
Establish notification responsibility
Confirm whether the proposed work requires an ESA notification and who will file it. When you hire a Licensed Electrical Contractor for notified work, the contractor handles the filing for its work.
ESA identifies a request to file contractor-performed work in the homeowner’s name as a red flag. Ask for clarification rather than treating it as a routine way to reduce project costs.
Keep the acceptance documentation
After notified work is reviewed and accepted, request the ESA Certificate of Acceptance and retain it with the scope and invoice. Match the documentation to the actual work completed.
Acceptance for one project should not be treated as a statement that every concealed installation in the property was replaced or inspected. Clear records help you understand the installation during future work or a sale.
Ask about relevant experience and handover
Discuss projects similar to yours. A smart-control installation, older-home rewiring and a utility-coordinated service upgrade involve different planning needs.
For connected systems, define setup, account ownership, programming and support. For renovation work, discuss coordination with other trades and who approves layout changes. Ask for references where useful.
Agree on changes and warranty terms
Keep added work and revised selections documented. Know how pricing changes will be approved and how scheduling depends on construction readiness.
Review workmanship coverage and product warranties separately. Confirm the process for reporting a problem and any maintenance responsibilities. Keep the contractor’s contact information with your completion records.
Common questions
Can my general contractor arrange the electrician?
Yes. Establish which Licensed Electrical Contracting business will perform the electrical scope and handle the applicable ESA arrangements.
Does every service visit produce an ESA certificate?
No. Documentation depends on the work and applicable notification requirements. Ask what applies to the actual scope.
