← Electrical Advice & Planning
Choose Sonos in-ceiling speakers around the room, listening positions and audio zones you want. A larger speaker does not compensate for an unsuitable layout, and adding more speakers does not automatically create independently controlled rooms.
For Toronto renovations and custom homes, define the system before rough-in. That allows speaker cables, amplifier locations and ceiling positions to be coordinated with lighting, structure and finishes.
Start with the way each room will be used
Describe whether the priority is background music, focused listening, entertaining or television audio. Include the main seating and activity areas.
A dining room and open kitchen may function as one listening space, while bedrooms may need independent control. Write down which rooms should play together and which should be able to play different audio.
Compare 6-inch and 8-inch speakers
Sonos offers 6-inch and 8-inch in-ceiling speakers by Sonance. Its guidance describes the larger option as generally offering deeper bass, wider coverage and greater maximum output.
That does not make the larger option necessary in every room. Review ceiling height, listening expectations, appearance and the available installation space. Compare the exact product specifications rather than using speaker diameter as the cutout dimension.
Placement follows listening areas and ceiling conditions
For stereo listening, the relationship between the left and right speakers and the listener matters. Sonos provides placement guidance that accounts for listening position and ceiling height.
Coordinate proposed locations with joists, ductwork, recessed lights, sprinklers and other ceiling equipment. Before openings are cut, confirm sufficient depth and access, along with any building-assembly requirements.
| Planning question | Decision it informs |
|---|---|
| Where do you listen? | Speaker placement and coverage. |
| What listening experience do you want? | Speaker selection and supporting equipment. |
| Which rooms need different music? | Independent audio-zone design. |
| What is above the ceiling? | Depth, routing and feasible positions. |
Speaker count is not the same as zone count
Several speakers connected to one Amp share its playback source. If you want different rooms to play different music at the same time, plan independent amplification and system arrangements for those zones.
Agree on everyday controls and grouping before ordering. A proposal listing only a speaker quantity can leave these expectations unresolved.
Check amplifier and speaker compatibility
The approved loading arrangement depends on the specific speaker products. Sonos permits up to three pairs of its Architectural speakers on one Amp in the specified parallel arrangement; that limit should not be applied to every third-party speaker.
Sonos also identifies matching-size conditions for its DSP and Trueplay functions. Ask the installer to review mixed speaker sizes and models rather than assuming any combination has the same features.
Plan the equipment location and handover
Locate amplification where ventilation, network access and servicing are practical. Provide cable routes and identification so the installation can be understood later.
Confirm who owns the Sonos account, how rooms will be named and what setup is included. At handover, review playback, volume, grouping and the support arrangement.
Common questions
Can ceiling speakers be installed in an existing home?
Often, but ceiling depth and cable access need review. Discuss any access openings and finish repairs.
Can in-ceiling speakers automatically serve as surround speakers?
Home-theatre use requires a compatible Sonos arrangement and appropriate placement. Define that goal separately from whole-home music.
