Electrical Service Upgrades

Electrical service upgrades.
Toronto & GTA.

Plan a 200 amp electrical service upgrade in Toronto or the GTA with Electric FX. We assess your existing supply and planned demand before recommending a 100A to 200A upgrade or larger-service planning. Our electricians also serve Barrie, Innisfil and Simcoe County, coordinating the electrical scope, utility requirements and ESA process.

Make room for your plans.

More appliances, an EV charger, a renovation or a growing household can change what you need from your electrical system. We review your existing service, panel condition and planned loads before recommending the next step.

A service upgrade increases the electrical capacity supplied to your property. A panel replacement updates the equipment that distributes that power. A new panel or subpanel alone does not increase the capacity of the incoming service.

Built around your property

The capacity your
home actually needs.

We help you understand what is needed now and what is worth planning for while the work is underway.

01 · Service capacity

100 amp to 200 amp service upgrades

Additional capacity for homes with increasing electrical demand. We assess the panel, meter equipment, service entrance and utility requirements to define the full scope of the upgrade.

02 · Larger electrical loads

400A service planning

For properties whose calculated demand calls for a larger service, including custom homes and substantial renovations. Equipment selection and the service arrangement are coordinated with the local utility.

The recommended service size depends on the load assessment, existing infrastructure and local utility requirements.

and a home that can grow.

Plan the equipment and electrical supply together, before installation day.

Charge at home

Capacity for an EV charger

We assess the existing household demand, your charger’s output and your charging needs. Depending on the assessment, the solution may be a dedicated circuit, an approved EV energy-management system or a larger service. Load management can reduce or pause charging while other loads are high. Explore EV charger installation.

Electrify your heating

Electrical preparation for heat pumps

Send us the proposed outdoor unit, air-handler and electric backup-heater specifications. We coordinate the electrical scope with your HVAC contractor and assess the combined demand before recommending circuits, panel changes or a service upgrade. The right answer depends on the actual equipment, not simply the home’s age.

100A to 200A

Upgrade the supply, not just the box

A 200A panel on its own does not turn a 100A supply into a 200A service. We review the meter equipment, service conductors, service entrance, grounding and bonding, along with utility requirements. Your proposal identifies the components that need to change.

Planning for 400A

Larger homes and larger demands

A custom home with multiple major electric loads may warrant a 400A service. We start with the calculated demand and future plans, then confirm utility availability, metering and the required distribution arrangement. A larger house does not automatically need 400A; the design determines the appropriate capacity.

From assessment
to final checks.

  1. Assess the property

We review the existing equipment, available capacity, site conditions and the electrical loads you want to add.

  2. Define the scope

You receive a clear proposal covering the recommended work, equipment and any utility or site requirements that affect the project.

  3. Coordinate the work

We arrange the required ESA notification and inspection steps, coordinate utility involvement and discuss the planned power interruption with you.

  4. Install & complete

Careful installation, circuit identification and final checks, with ESA acceptance documentation provided once the work has been accepted.

Before you upgrade

Good questions.
Clear answers.

Every property is different. An assessment helps turn the options into a clear plan for yours.

What should a service-upgrade quote include?

Compare the full scope: proposed service rating, panel and breaker selection, meter and service-entrance work, grounding and bonding changes, circuit identification, and ESA and utility coordination. The proposal should identify utility charges and whether trenching, repairs to finished surfaces or other related work are included. A panel replacement and a larger incoming service are different projects, even if the new panels look similar.

How long does it take to arrange a service upgrade?

The overall schedule includes assessment, the utility’s requirements, equipment availability and the agreed installation and inspection arrangements. The planned power interruption is only one part of that timeline. Contact us early if an upgrade is tied to a renovation or new equipment; we confirm the sequence and expected outage before work begins.

How should I prepare for the planned power interruption?

Keep the panel and agreed work areas accessible, make arrangements for anyone who needs uninterrupted power, and tell us about equipment that must stay operational. We discuss the expected outage and any project-specific preparation before the scheduled work. Utility reconnection depends on the required coordination and authorization, so the timing is confirmed for your installation.

Do I need a panel replacement or a service upgrade?

That depends on whether the issue is equipment condition, a lack of circuit space or insufficient electrical capacity. We assess all three. A replacement panel may address condition or circuit space, while an increase in service capacity involves reviewing the incoming supply and related equipment.

Does an EV charger always require a 200A service?

No. The answer depends on the existing electrical load, charger requirements and installation. An approved EV energy-management system may allow charging within the capacity of an existing service. We assess the options for your property. Explore our EV charging services or read ESA’s guidance on service capacity and energy management.

Will my power need to be turned off?

A service or panel upgrade involves a planned power interruption. The length of the interruption depends on the work and any utility or inspection coordination. We discuss the expected schedule and preparation with you before the installation.

Who handles the ESA notification and inspection?

Electric FX coordinates the required ESA notification and inspection process for our electrical work, along with utility disconnection and reconnection arrangements where needed. We provide the acceptance documentation once ESA has accepted the work. Read ESA’s notification and inspection guidance.

How much does a 200 amp service upgrade cost in Toronto?

Our planning range for a 200A electrical service upgrade is $3,000–$5,000+ CAD, plus HST. The final price depends on the existing supply, meter location, equipment, access and utility requirements. Underground work and relocation are quoted separately. Your proposal identifies ESA coordination, utility charges and other inclusions or exclusions. Read our 200A service-upgrade cost guide. If you only need to replace equipment at the same capacity, explore electrical panel replacement.

What should I send with my enquiry?

Your address, a description of the work you are planning, and photos of the outside of your panel and meter area are a useful starting point. There is no need to remove any electrical covers. We will let you know what else is needed and arrange a site assessment as appropriate.
