Target the areas that need protection

The right heat trace system
for the right location.

Heating cable is selected for its intended use, the surface or pipe it protects, and the winter conditions at your property. We plan the cable, power supply and control system together.

01 · Roof edges

Roof de-icing cables

Layouts for vulnerable eaves and valleys, using cable and attachments suitable for the roofing material. We review drainage patterns and coordinate with your roofer where roof condition, access or attachment details need specialist input.

02 · Drainage paths

Gutters & downspouts

Heating cable arrangements that help maintain a path for meltwater through gutters and downspouts. We consider the full drainage route, including where water discharges, rather than treating the roof edge in isolation.

03 · Vulnerable water lines

Pipe freeze protection

Suitable cable for accessible water lines exposed to freezing conditions. Pipe material, diameter, insulation and expected temperatures guide the selection. Plumbing repairs and insulation work are coordinated as needed.

Drainage protection has a specific purpose. Roof cables create meltwater pathways; they are not designed to clear an entire roof of snow. Roof condition, attic insulation, ventilation and clear gutters remain part of managing winter problems.

Check the supply before connecting

More than a cable
and an outdoor plug.

A suitable electrical supply is part of a dependable installation. We assess your existing outlets and circuits against the proposed equipment, or quote new circuits and connection points where needed.

Already selected a kit? Send us its model number, voltage and cable lengths so we can review it before installation.

  • Circuit capacity: existing loads, cable demand and cold-start characteristics
  • Ground-fault protection: the correct arrangement for the selected system and installation
  • Outdoor connections: suitable receptacles, covers, enclosures and connection accessories
  • Controls: compatible thermostats, sensors, switching and contactors where required
  • Testing: manufacturer-specified checks and applicable ESA notification and inspection arrangements
Equipment & operation

Choose the cable.
Plan how it runs.

Cable matched to the application

We assess self-regulating and fixed-output systems according to the installation requirements. Roof and pipe products are not automatically interchangeable, and connections, end seals, supports and insulation must suit the selected cable.

Controls matched to the conditions

Roof systems may use temperature and moisture sensing; pipe systems may use suitable temperature controls. We explain the proposed operation and seasonal checks. Self-regulating cable can still consume power when energized.

Operating cost depends on actual system power, weather, run time and your electricity rate. We can discuss the connected load and control strategy as part of your quote.

A clear installation process

From site review to winter readiness.

  1. 01

    Review

Look at the problem areas, roof or pipe details, access and existing electrical supply.

  2. 02

    Plan

Confirm the cable layout, approved materials, controls and any work needed from other trades.

  3. 03

    Install

Complete the agreed electrical and cable work with suitable fastening, connection and protection methods.

  4. 04

    Test & hand over

Perform the required checks and explain operation, seasonal maintenance and when to arrange service.

Heat trace cable installation cost

A written quote.
A clearly defined scope.

A short pipe-protection installation and a multi-level roof de-icing system require different materials, access and electrical work. We price the actual project after reviewing the location and equipment requirements.

Your quote identifies the agreed cable supply, controls, labour, electrical upgrades and applicable ESA arrangements. Roofing, plumbing, gutter repairs and access equipment are identified as included or excluded.

  • Cable type, voltage, output and total installed length
  • Roof shape, gutter and downspout routes, or pipe layout
  • Roof height, slope and safe access requirements
  • Existing electrical supply versus new dedicated circuits
  • Controls, sensors, enclosures and connection components
  • Insulation, repairs and coordination with other trades

Your quote checklist

  • Property address and the areas needing protection
  • Roof, gutter and downspout photos, or accessible pipe photos
  • Approximate lengths, roof height and access details
  • Roofing material, or pipe material, size and insulation
  • Photos of nearby outlets and the closed electrical panel
  • Cable make, model and lengths, if already purchased

Do not climb onto a snowy or icy roof or remove electrical covers to collect information. We can arrange a site assessment.

Before you book

Heat trace installation FAQs.

Answers for roof de-icing, pipe protection and existing outlet assessments.

Can you check my existing outdoor outlets first?

Yes. We can assess the receptacle condition, grounding, ground-fault protection, weatherproofing, circuit rating and other connected loads against the proposed cable’s requirements. Send the model number and planned lengths. An outlet being outdoors does not by itself mean it is suitable for a heating cable.

Will roof heating cables remove all the snow or fix an ice dam?

They are designed to maintain drainage channels where meltwater could otherwise refreeze. They do not clear the whole roof, stop snow from sliding, or repair roof defects and attic heat loss. Existing heavy ice, leaks or damaged gutters may need attention from a roofing professional before cable installation.

What is the difference between self-regulating and constant-wattage cable?

Self-regulating cable adjusts its heat output as its temperature changes. Constant-wattage cable has a specified output while energized. Each has its own approved applications, accessories and installation limits. Self-regulating does not mean the cable switches itself completely off; suitable controls still matter.

Can the same cable be used on a roof and on a water pipe?

Only if that exact product is approved for both applications. We check the cable’s listing, installation instructions, roof or pipe material, temperature limits and exposure conditions. A product labelled heat tape is not automatically suitable for every use.

Do I need a dedicated circuit or GFCI protection?

We determine circuit and ground-fault protection requirements from the selected system, its starting and operating loads, the existing installation and applicable electrical rules. Some projects need a new dedicated circuit; others may be suitable for an existing supply after assessment. A standard breaker alone is not a substitute for required ground-fault protection.

Can you install cables I have already purchased?

We can review the product, condition, required accessories and proposed application. Send the label, model number, lengths and instructions before booking. Suitability must be confirmed before installation; fixed-length kits generally cannot be shortened, and overlap rules vary by product.

How much does heat trace cable installation cost?

The cable system, total length, controls, new circuit requirements, roof height, access and any corrective work determine the price. We provide a written proposal after reviewing the project. Equipment supply, access equipment, applicable ESA arrangements and any work by other trades are clearly identified.

When should I book, and what maintenance is needed?

Plan before freezing weather, while the roof and gutters can be accessed safely. Before each heating season, have cable condition, supports, controls and required protection checked, and keep drainage routes clear. If a system is damaged or repeatedly trips, stop using it and arrange an assessment.
